Everyone nowadays is always trying to maximize their time and efficiency. Whether it means getting the newest iPhone or having the latest smart watch, everyone, at some point, wants to get more out of what they have.

The same mindset goes for those of us looking to get more out of our workouts. We always want to increase our fitness levels and weight loss or weigh gains so why not do just that. Here are a few tips to really maximize your workouts and fitness routines;

Limit your distractions. How many times have you been to the gym where in between your fitness routine you’ve picked up your phone, checked your Instagram, checked your Facebook, texted your friend, or a combination of all of the above? We are all guilty at some point or another and it really can put a damper on your sweat session. While you may be taking the recommended amount of time in between sets for a rest period, you could be letting your distractions take over your fitness time. That one hour gym session now becomes an hour and a half all because you wanted to check your phone. Not to mention the people around you waiting for the machine you’re on or the weight set you’re using are all getting antsy because they’re waiting for you to put your phone down.  I’m sure we can all last without checking our phones and social media accounts for about 30 to 60 minutes, which is recommended for a workout, that way we can really focus on what needs to get done. An easy way to ignore these unwanted distractions is to switch our phones on silent, “do not disturb,” or even airplane mode. Whichever your phone allows for so you won’t be tempted to take away from your gym time.

Mix up your music. For me there’s nothing worse than working out without music. I feel not having a good playlist put together or having the right Pandora station on can really make or break your workout. Music helps keep motivation levels high especially if you’re completing a more challenging routine. I recommend you pick songs that have an upbeat tempo. Whether it’s current radio hits or some KISS radio, try and pick some music to go along with the type of workout you’re doing. Try to remember your headphones too!

Use active rest breaks. Sometimes if I want to get a more challenging workout in, I try and use my rest times for an active one. That means instead of taking that 30 seconds to rest, try and add in a 20 second plank or 20 seconds of jumping jacks. Doing this can help keep your heart rate high and increase the amount of calories you burn during your fitness routine. With that, remember to drink water and take a few moments in between to breathe. If you’re struggling don’t feel bad about using your rest periods for rest. Just be sure to stay off the phone.

Overall, there are plenty of ways to maximize your workouts to help you stay accountable. I know I’ve named a few but give it a try and see just how much better your workouts become. I think you’ll find it beneficial and actually help you maximize your time and effort for your fitness routines. Remember to stay hydrated and have fun. Fitness is a lifestyle so make those fitness filled days count.
