Colombian-born NYC-based designer Edwing D’Angelo is set to present his FW17 collection titled “Collision” on Tuesday, February 14th at 6:30 pm at the Artists Gallery located at 4 West 43rd Street (corner of 5th Ave.)
D’Angelo is excited about his return to presenting formal fashion shows in New York City after being absent from the runways for the last 2 seasons. “While I truly enjoyed showing overseas and seeking new markets and inspirations, the energy that I get from doing runway shows here at home in NYC is unprecedented,” says D’Angelo. This year, Edwing D’Angelo will present a unique point of view in a full display in the form of an all red alert.
His inspiration comes from the red dress uniforms worn by Pope Pious VII Noble Guards which was established in 1801. “I happened to come across a portrait depicting his coronation and I was floored by the vibrancy of the red and its predominance in the ceremony,” says D’Angelo. “Red has always been one of my favorite colors, but I believe that’s the allure of power is what intrigued me the most. It is no secret that I love opulence, but in this particular portrait, I sensed that the imposition of such guards was worthy of interpreting for today’s modern day man and woman.” The collection could not come at a better time, he interprets his overuse of red to the social climate that the world is experiencing. Red is the color of power and hard views. The powerful has always used it to stamp their dominance upon others.
The men’s collection is smart and playful, offering a full array of options to wear both during daytime as well as nighttime; while making a powerful statement. D’Angelo offers beautiful slacks, shirts, jackets, suits, vest, coats, sweaters and shorts in cotton, wool, silks; which for the most part are all ready-to-wear. His strong tailoring skills are on full display in this sartorial concept.
The women’s collection, on the other hands, offers a softer tone, which romanticizes the presentation. D’Angelo visits his Latin roots and combines the glam of his original inspiration, the draping of the curtains and chandeliers, which inspired a sexy proposition for this collection. He gives her body conscious looks with swimwear becoming an integral part of the presentation. “Latin women want to feel beautiful and sexy at all times,” says D’Angelo.” “There is nothing sexier than beautiful swimwear made ready-to-wear that can also be part of her daily wardrobe, to be paired with pencil skirts, pant suits or simply to go clubbing with a bomber sequence jacket.” He also adds beautiful cropped trench coats in wool with novelty touches. It wouldn’t be a D’Angelo collection without his signature show-stopper evening gowns with high slits, beautiful trains, and well-conceived fitting. This collection is liberating while bringing sexy back and empowering her to be herself. D’Angelo believes that in times like this, women will appreciate his approach.
