Art deco on the catwalk at Elie Madi

As the collection of Elie Madi walked down the runway at Art Hearts Fashion in New York on Feb. 8, it was as if the term “art deco” had come alive.

The embellishments and patterns on the garments from the Lebanese designer took the best of what we know as the art deco movement and put them out on the catwalk.

Watching the show, with tones of gold and black and points in-between, I had thoughts of the Roaring 20s, “The Thin Man,” and “The Great Gatsby.” The gowns were slinky, sexy, and lush. All we needed was Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow to join the models in the great hall of the Angel Orenzanz Center.

The collection shown in New York was perfect for old style cocktail parties where butlers hold out silver trays to guests filled with delicious hors d’oeuvres of caviar, foie gras, and vintage champagne while conversations centered on all things social– without a lick of politics to spoil the quick-fire repartee.
