It’s all about the bikini this year.
Edited (Edited.com), a source of real time business data to the retail industry, reported in May that the two-piece is still number one.
“Bikinis are not going anywhere,” said Edited in a report noting the brisk business of the swimwear staple.
In the U.S. bikini sales were up 11 percent in the first quarter of 2019, said Edited.
In other retail swimwear news, Edited said in its report, “Function over form also is proving to be a trend for retailers.”
“As sporty styles continue to trend in apparel, the swim market follows suit,” said Edited. Active swimwear experienced a 25 percent increase for the first quarter of sales in 2019.
Swimsuits that embrace body diversity are also on trend for 2019, said Edited.
Edited said studies report the average U.S. size for women sits from 16 and 18
“Diverse sizing is essential in swimwear, which has started to see shifts within the shop by fit market,” said Edited. “Petite swimwear has increased by 15 percent (since last year) … and plus size is trending up 31 percent.” Swimwear geared for taller women also is experiencing growth, said Edited.
In terms of colors and patterns, Edited said tropical florals are soaring in popularity for 2019.
Animal prints also are a growing trend, with leopard being the most popular, said Edited. And snakeskin prints have experienced a 237 percent increase in sales since last year.
