Model Misty Hernandez wears a hand-painted dress by Mexican artist Juventino Elizondo of Linares, Nuevo León, Mexico.

The Quetzalcoatl is portrayed on the dress. It is a feathered (or plumed) serpent or precious twin. Misty explained, “It was worshiped by early peoples of pre-Hispanic Mexico and Central America. Quetzalcoatl, god of life, light and wisdom, lord of the day and the winds. He also was associated with learning, with the Aztec zodiac, and with fertility, water, and vegetation.

The hummingbird also is depicted on the dress. “In Nahuatl, it is called huitzilin or huitzitzilin. It was one of the most sacred birds of the ancient Mexicans, since it represented the god Huitzilopochtli who wore it in his headdress, always attached to a flower that represented the heart.”
