Backstage Pass: Catching up with Erik Dobell and ‘Impossibilities’

by VICTORIA ELIZABETH

Impossibilites: Magic, Mindreading, and Mayhem

Starring master mentalist, Erik Dobell (who has traveled the world performing for prestigious clients including the NFL, Macy’s and Goodyear), “Impossibilities: Magic, Mindreading, and Mayhem” is truly the only show of its kind in the Great Smoky Mountains, fusing elements of classic sleight of hand, parlor magic, and edge of your seat, real time, cutting edge mentalism that will have you asking to yourself time and time again: “How did he do that?”

Backstage Pass has had the privilege of highlighting the Impossibilities show many times in Gatlinburg, even featuring Dobell as a special guest on the Backstage Pass podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/backstage-pass-with-victoria/id1437984392?i=1000493262012) and the Backstage Pass team and I were elated to return to the brand new Impossibilities location (which is intimate and perfectly suited to the nature of this show) , located in the bustling heart of Pigeon Forge, right beside Dave and Busters.

Dobell, energetic, enigmatic, and endlessly engaging with his crowds, kicks off his nearly 90-minute, edge-of-your-seat, action-packed show with Chinese Rings (an ancient performance art that some say dates back to 181–234 AD) , which magically interlink and unlink right before the audience’s very eyes.

Just a few of the wildly impressive acts during the show include a bit where the headliner hands a book to a randomly selected audience member, instructs them to open to a random page and land on a word, then he exactly guesses the selected word as well as the page selected, an act where he unbelievably interlinks rings gathered from the audience and numerous occasions throughout where the show’s headliner  quite literally reads the very minds of his guests, accurately guessing exact birthdays, names of first crushes, and even dream vacation destinations.

Fans of Impossibilities: Magic, Mindreading and Mayhem will certainly delight in the gift shop, which offers an array of merchandise, some of which Dobell exhibits during the show including a set of light up thumbs (perfect for beginner illusionists or magicians to hone their craft, or just to play with for fun or to prank friends), as well as a magical coloring book, featuring pages that appear and disappear within seconds.

Wildly unique, endlessly entertaining and undeniably original, see for yourself why media outlets and fans alike are buzzing about Impossibilities!

Plus, if you enjoy the show, and I’m sure you will, you can leave a video testimonial on an iPad speciality set up for this purpose, for the chance to be featured on Impossibilities’ myriad of social media platforms. One guest’s testimonial even stated that he is “almost as good as Taylor Swift!”)
