Siegfried ( at The Atlanta Opera )
Siegfried, an epic five-hour opera delving into themes of ambition, passion, control, power, and war, was originally performed in 1876 as the third of the four music dramas that constitute Richard Wagner’s cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen.”
The Atlanta Opera, known for its dynamic and beautifully executed interpretations of both classic and contemporary operas, exquisitely brought this legendary production to life at the grand Cobb Energy Center main-stage April 26-May 4.
The Backstage Pass team received an opportunity to spotlight this iconic Wagnerian opera and provide you with an inside look on what you can expect to experience when attending an Atlanta Opera Performance.
Brimming with a unique blend of music, drama, and poetry, this extensive opera opens upon the titular character and his foster father, the dwarf Mime, who has raised Siegfried under false pretenses and meticulously trained him to live in the absence of fear. Siegfried, doubting the truth and transparency of his “father’s” words and actions engages in near constant conflict with Mime and becomes determined to discover and actualize his own destiny.
The deceptive and devious Mime convinces the bullheaded and brawny Siegfried to forge a sword and utilize it to slay Fafner, the dragon guarding the Nibelungs’ treasure. The cowardly dwarf, who is afraid to face the dragon himself is pleasantly surprised to discover that his adopted “son” has indeed repaired the magical sword, after which Siegfried embarks upon an extraordinary journey of Herculean proportions, to defeat evil, exact justice, and perhaps even fine hid one true love in the process .
Our brave hero battles a looming dragon, comes face to face with the truth regarding his upbringing, and faces fate head on as he is guided by the sweet, serene song of a mysterious songbird. The understanding and interpretation of the aforementioned song is made clear after touching the blood of the dragon which he slayed, and our protagonist understands what must now be done. He presses onward to find the beautiful and mysterious Brünnhilde, whom was previously punished by Odin to remain in a deep slumber whilst surrounded by a magical fire until one brave, intrepid, and worthy enough to rescue her arrives.
Awakened by true love’s kiss, Brünnhilde’s grateful, yet trepidatious reaction to Siegfried leaves our leading man perplexed and aghast. Will his arduous journey be in vain? Will he finally gain true love and companionship? Will this larger than life tale end as a tragedy or happily ever after?
This astonishingly complex opera will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you spellbound with unexpected twists and turns, breathtaking visuals, dynamic vocals, and a storyline that stands the test of time.
Operating under the steadfast leadership of Tomer Zvulun, who is known for his dynamic creative vision, the Atlanta Opera upheld its reputation as a foremost destination for world class operatic productions with Siegfried, featuring the renowned direction of Roberto Kalb (whose credits include the Santa Fe Opera conducting l’elisir d’amore, Atlanta Opera Rigoletto, the Kansas City Symphony, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago).
