Backstage Pass: Over the moon with the falls

By VICTORIA ELIZABETH

Widely lauded by tourists from around the world and press outlets alike as one of the foremost ways to experience the splendor of breathtaking Niagara Falls, Over the Falls Tours employs the very best, not to mention the most entertaining, tour guides to provide an optimal experience for the thousands of guests who visit each year. The Backstage Pass team took a visit.

Our tour was guided by the personable, enigmatic and endlessly charismatic Lenny and Dale, whose lively banter and wit ensured that our nearly two-hour tour never had a dull moment whatsoever.

Always quick with a fascinating factoid regarding the development of the area and a punny joke, Lenny and Dale provided intriguing insights regarding Niagara Fall’s rich history as a natural wonder of the world and an internationally acclaimed tourist destination.

We passed a towering statue of the legendary Chief Pontiac, whose tie to Niagara Falls is through his leadership in Pontiac’s War (1763-1766), a large-scale uprising against British control in the Great Lakes region.

Our trusty tour guides also provided insights regarding the wildly intriguing “Daredevils of Niagara Falls,” including the quirky school teacher, Annie Edson Taylor (who propelled over the falls with her cat, Iagara), Bobby Leach, and Nik Wallenda (of the world -famous “Flying Wallenda” circus family).

Over the Falls Tours is certain to be perfectly suited for everyone in your group, from toddlers to senior citizens, and my Mimi (who had just celebrated her 91st birthday) enjoyed the leisurely pace at which the tour unfolded which proved to be a relaxing and fun way to savor the sights and sounds of Niagara. Upon the conclusion of our walking tour, we headed toward the iconic Maid of the Mist Boat, where we bid farewell to our guides and stepped on the grand double decker boat, where a nearly half hour boat tour awaited, which transports guests on a majestic journey from the U.S. side of Niagara Falls, N.Y., into the basin of the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls, and subsequently returns to the American side.

Our helpful tour guides, Lenny and Dale, dutifully took photos as our boat departed, capturing photo keepsakes to commemorate our once in a lifetime tour experience, and as we neared the base of the towering, stately 188 foot waterfall, we basked in the mist and soaked in the memories of a Birds Eye vantage point of one of the most profoundly beautiful natural wonders of the world.

Special thanks to Jennifer, Lenny, Dale, and the entirety of the Over the Falls Team for facilitating our visit for this spotlight feature.
