Inspiration and passion stoked

The COVID-19 pandemic provided the inspiration and opportunity for Shamone Garcia to follow her passions.

Shamone, who recently competed at the Magnifique Showcase organized by former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Victoria Henley, is now a plus-sized model and a pageant queen.

But when she was younger, she had not considered those as viable vocations.

“Growing up, it was hard being different both physically and mentally,” said Shamone. “I knew I had what it took but was always challenged by society’s stereotypes.”

Shamone, who works as a probation officer, said she eventually decided to try her hand at pageants. “Being new to the pageant world, I’ve increased confidence within herself,” she said.

Shamone will be competing for the state crown of Ms. South Carolina Plus America 2023 this year. Her platform is “Breaking All Barriers” through personal development — encouraging people to break through their barriers and offer a helping hand to others.

Now that she is also a fashion model, Shamone said “I advocate for full-figured models by making sure opportunities are shared with my voluptuous sisters.”
