The Great Smoky Mountain Murder Mystery Dinner Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. has firmly established its reputation as the premier murder mystery dinner theater in the Smokey Mountain Region since its inception over 12 years ago.

Featuring kitschy, comical and wildly original dinner shows including “Moonshine Murders,” “Who Shot the Sheriff,” “Marriage can be Murder,” and most recently “Killer Prom (a 1980’s Disaster),” this gem of the theater has entertained, shocked and delighted fans from across the nation with its one of a kind scripts, chilling plot twists, laugh out loud dialogue, and a scrumptious 3 course feast to accompany each show.

Our warm and personable server, Nathaniel (also a talented local singer/songwriter who entertained us with some videos of his exceptional Johnny Cash covers in between scenes) presented us with our food and beverage options, which were delivered in intermittent courses throughout the duration of the two-hour show.

Beverage options included  the choice of tea, soft drinks (and coffee with dessert) , a choice among three soups: broccoli cheese, potato and chicken noodle (we selected the delectable, hearty and satiating broccoli cheese and potato options), and an entree served up southern style, consisting of a crispy fried chicken breast (traditional white gravy  on the side) , fresh green beans, buttery corn on the cob, creamy mashed potatoes with a soft, freshly baked bread roll. Dessert options are a decadent and rich cheesecake (with the option of caramel, chocolate, and white chocolate sauces available to adorn your perfect slice) and (my choice) a Milky Way cake, consisting of layer upon layer of gooey caramel and flavorful indulgent milk and dark chocolate, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

The Great Smoky Mountain Murder Mystery Dinner Theater takes great pride in offering some of the best quality foods and friendliest service you’ll find at any dinner theater show in the Smokies.

“Killer Prom,” arguably one of the most hilariously unique and wildly memorable shows ever performed at the theater is a 1980s farce focused upon an impending prom at rural high school. The school has suffered  a gory, merciless blood bath at the hands of a cold blooded killer exactly every 17 years. It is attended by a plucky, colorful group of kids (“Killer Prom’s” principal cast of players) including a couple of stereotypical jocks who share a “bondage” (bond?) like no other, your quintessential blond, pretty popular “prom queen” type with a chic sense of style paired with a razor sharp tongue, and a goth girl with a penchant for seances and excursions to the cemetery.

The group of hapless teens – despite warnings from their cynical goth friend that the killer will most likely claim his next victim at this year’s prom – continue to plan for the landmark night in gleeful anticipation, despite a few morbid warnings: including blood running out from the boys’ locker room showers and a myriad of other morbid warning signs.

Chaos ensues as the characters unwittingly fall deeper and deeper into the killer’s lair until, alas, a fatal stabbing ensues when you least expect it leaving the audience “detectives” to decipher “who-dunnit,” “how-dunnit” and “why-dunnit” –enlisting the help of their trusty clue packets.

Additional standout moments include laugh out loud hilarious audience participation bits, a supporting cast of players including the outrageous and wildly inappropriate janitor aptly named “Sloppy Mop,” a gym teacher with a hard core Bostonian accent and “totally hip” dance moves (the sole survivor of the slasher’s murders decades ago), and Daddy Bombshell (portrayed with pitch perfect comic timing by the writer and director, the brilliant Jamie Goldman) a flamboyant Australian couture designer who makes an unforgettable appearance, while all decked out in the latest fashions.

Creative, clever, quirky, and reminiscent of “Saturday Night Live’s” “Golden Era” of comedy, “Killer Prom” is guaranteed to make you and your entire group “Laugh till You Die”.

Special thanks to the amazing Jamie Goldman and the entire Murder Mystery Crew for setting up our visit for this spotlight feature.
